it was extremely successful - it was in a school hall with general community

Well done, Jeffery! I truly wish I could have been there.

it is someone who is young and talented. The cover is spectacular, a great

It settled on 114 submission, many of which were of very high quality...or better.

Round 1 is complete, which is in many ways the toughest - we culled the submissions to 29 - and it was tough. Real tough. I believe a number that were rejected would have been strong candidates for SQ Mag's general submission, but this is a contest. We have to remind ourselves every moment.

Round 2 and the final Round 3 are always handled in rapid succession - Round 2 we draw the field down to around 5 to 7, and Round 3 we choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

We should have the short list and winners published close to 15 November 2013.

The stories (without authors' names) that made Round 2 are as follows:

Kyle’s life had reached a standstill. He had no job, no friends and no interest in acquiring either. All he wanted was an escape from his problems… to be alone. So it was on a whim that he bought his ticket aboard the SS Caribia, a small, cheap cruise ship headed nowhere. He never could have foreseen what would soon take place—the fierce storm, the accident that threw him to the waves.

Now he finds himself in a strange new world, one he doesn’t understand. Where armor-clad adventurers travel the world and battle monsters in search of fortune and glory.

Loria.

With the help of his newfound friends, Kyle must come to terms with this fantastic world, unravelling the mystery surrounding his arrival and learning of his own newly awakened abilities. Lowy's Die LaughingThe following paragraphs are taken from a great review of Louis K Lowy's Die Laughing by Bex'n'Books.

Die Laughing is a dark comedy sci-fi
story set in Las Vegas in 50s America and centres around a stand up
comedian called Sam. E Lakeside. Sam has just got the break he's been
waiting for, a chance to leave the seedy bars and comedy clubs behind
for a booking on the Steve Allen Show. Finally, he's going make it big;
that is until a mobster puts a contract out on him for messing with his
girlfriend. Just as Sam is digging his own shallow grave in the Nevada
desert with a gun aimed at him, the unimaginable happens. Sam, and the
would be assassin, Francis, and his tough sexy girlfriend, Cricket, are
all abducted by aliens...

Die Laughing is not normally the type of
story I go for, but I'm so glad I did. The plot is very well written as
are the characters. Each of them very individual and each with their
own inner demons. The story moves at a fast pace and has many jokes and
quips peppered all the way through it. There are many references to 50s
American TV some of which I wasn't familiar with, but that aside, this
was a very enjoyable book with underlying messages scattered throughout.
Its not often that I comment on book covers, but this one is brilliant!
Bright, eye catching and retro, it demands attention; it's one you
cannot ignore.

I would definitely recommend Die
Laughing; it's fresh and different and a fantastic change to my normal
reading list. I was pleasantly surprised with it, and I look forward to
reading more from Mr Lowy. I give Die Laughing 5 fantastic Bexstars! A
job well done.

IFWG Publishing is pleased to announce, with effect immediately, the creation of an Australian imprint of IFWG Publishing. This doesn't really change much on the surface, for readers and authors, but there are a lot of good things that come out of this.

The reasons why we are doing this, and the benefits, can be outlined below:

For non-US authors, sending shipments of books from the US to the country of destination places a large amount of overhead on the author and publisher (in terms of time and money). This new arrangement has printing and distribution centered in Australia for Australian books, but with the flexibility of printing and distributing overseas (same infrastructure company is used - Ingram/Lightning Source).

A sizeable portion of our authors are Australian, and the majority of works are Australian in content. We really need to capture the local market as a priority, and see later if we want to 'internationalise' it. This means we want Australian printed books written in Australian English, for Australian audiences. This makes a lot of sense to us.

So in the coming months, we will carry out the following, in rough order of priority:

Publish Kings of Under-Castle in the Australian imprint, instead of the International (and convert to Australian English). The ebook is already published, but an Australian English version will also be published.

Publish Paper Magic in the Australian Imprint, instead of the International.

Publish the third Brumbies novel in the Australian imprint.

Adjust printer and distribution locations for the first two Brumbies books.

Re-publish A Magpie Called Will in Australian English in the Australian Imprint.

Publish Sealskin Coast in the Australian Imprint.

Publish The Adventures of Teddy and Karl in the Australian Imprint.

No doubt there will be more, but this is plenty of work for our new imprint.
This is the classic issue that any small publisher faces - when there are a few critical people, if they are out of action, then, well, nothing much happens. The good news is that all key personnel are back on deck, and the ship is being rounded to its designated course. Sail ho!

We have some important tasks to take care of first, related to better reporting and royalty payment infrastructure - stay tuned on this. Immediately following that we are tackling our very significant backlog of titles. First cab off that rank is getting our ebooks that don't have print versions, onto trade paperback. Some are long overdue. Following that we have some fantastic titles that are eagerly awaiting release. We will shortly do a bit of pre-publishing marketing as they deserve it. Finally, we will catch up on the remainder of 2013's releases.

Needless to say we will be busy. Good busy, however.
It is a fantasy story but it is ringed in truth about superstition and deep-centered truth. It preserves, in this Western edition of the novel, as much of the Nigerian English idiom as possible, which adds to the color and texture of the narrative.

Visit Clara's site a few times, because Biola will soon have an interview posted in the blog.

Let me explain.

IFWG Publishing has always had an ethos of helping new authors. We do this by publishing many such writers, but we also established some years ago a print magazine called "SQ Magazine". It was an experiment, and in fact it succeeded in producing 3 large editions, with a lot of very good fiction. However, we realized it was following a business model that was not in line with what the market is currently operating under. We chose last year to take the plunge.

In March 2012 we ceased production of 'SQ Magazine' and replaced it with 'SQ Mag', a 6 per year ezine, with an annual 'best of' anthology. We also decided we would start off free, to show to the world that we were serious about making it work, and more importantly, that we still want to publish new talent. Sophie Yorkston agreed to continue her excellent Editor In Chief role.

To make SQ Mag work, we decided that it needed to have its own financial arrangements, and not be reliant on funding from IFWG Publishing, nor to muddy accounting. The end result was an agreement with IFWG Publishing that the company would support the ezine with 'intangible assets', such as web infrastructure, and IFWG would publish the 'best of' anthology, but only recoup publication costs. This is very generous. The net result is that any donations, or after-cost profits of the anthology (and aside from royalty sharing with contributors), SQ Mag has a source of income. They are also considering merchandizing. This is why SQ Mag is independently managed. This is also why they are are able to continue to support new writers.

As of 2nd May 2013, SQ Mag has decided to elevate its market status to 'token', which means that they now pay a small sum to all authors whose work are published. This is, in the scheme of things, a small step, but it is a critical step to progress to the next level of payment to authors. For SQ Mag, and for IFWG Publishing, this is in fact a big deal. Very big. It elevates SQ Mag into a PAID market, and the industry notices this. Authors notice this. This is an opportunity to get a stronger reader base, and attract more author submissions. Hopefully we get more donations.

I ask you to spread the word that SQ Mag is now a paying market. I would also urge you to ask your friends, family and acquaintances to go to www.sqmag.com and read Issue 8, which is second to none. They will immediately see what SQ Mag can produce.

I would like to close this editorial with an observation. Edition 8 of SQ Mag is something special. Not only is it the largest and most talent-filled edition yet, it is also devoted entirely to short fiction by women writers. This is a bold move and makes a strong statement about how much talent and skill exists in the female strata of the speculative fiction writing community, as well commentary on the lingering discrimination in areas of the industry. Well done, Sophie Yorkston!
This is a regional broadsheet with a readership of at least one million people. More importantly, this is a Nigerian review of a novel that IFWG Publishing has taken great pains in ensuring the story is readable for Western World English readers, and yet retain the style and quality of the Nigerian idiom. It appears we have passed with flying colors from a local point of view - and we are relieved and very proud of this achievement.

The review, titled 'Predetermination and man's earthly mission', was written by the reviewer, Sunmola Olowookere.

Here are a few snippets from the full-page review:

"This work of fiction by this seasoned writer, Biola Olatunde is not a novel for the ordinary man, it is for deep thinkers who are striving for higher and ennobling recognitions and the human link with the spiritual world."

"The novel, Numen Yeye, is about intertwining worlds and it teaches about predestination. The novel also has satiric qualities as the readers become aware of the ills of polygamy and extended families. It also gently scoffs at Nigerians' show of religiousity which had not helped in solving our problems. It also encourages female education."

"It is a work rich with cultural practices of the Yoruba people. While the author does not bore the reader with traditional mumbo-jumbo, it has brought home to us that we cannot forget our roots and our links to what has been before our existence."

"The author, in this work, has outdone herself. Her understanding of man's existence and the importance of understanding his purpose in life is portrayed in Imole Ife [main character] and her desire to understand her mission in life."

"Really, I want to say the readers who know Biola Olatunde and the richness of her prose could not have expected anything less than the dexterity she exhibited in Numen Yeye."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1820710599938853281.post-9435527916531262532013-04-03T16:24:00.003-07:002013-04-03T16:25:45.409-07:00From The Editor: April 2013 NewsletterIn this editorial I will do my last retrospective for this year, focusing on our publications of 2012.

2012 was in many ways a good year for IFWG, as we had perfected a number of our publishing processes. However, we also were affected by a few natural events as well as personal that caused some delays in several of our titles, and in which we are only now starting to recover from. Nevertheless we published a fair number of titles.

We kicked the year off very quickly with the publication of Ferryman, by Jonathan Wise, a wonderful post-apocalyptic tale with strong grounding in characterization and original storyline. I cannot say much more about this story as the twists require me to give too much away.

Shortly after Jonathan's title, we published Blackthorns of the Forgotten by Bree Donovan, a story with many unique facets. This story is courageous as it explores the nature of love in many dimensions, and yet maintains a great pace of contemporary fantasy set largely in modern Ireland.

Our own Esme Carpenter published her first novel Against the Elements in late January 2012 (yes, we published three novels in January 2012!), an early teen (middle grade) fantasy of relentless pace set in a world reminiscent of Ancient Greece. This was our second middle grade novel and since then, IFWG Publishing has viewed this audience as an important target for future publications.

Later in the first half of 2012 we published KnorraSky: The Earth Blade, volume 2 of the KnorraSky series, by R.A. Knowlton. This heroic fantasy piece fluidly continues from the conclusion of KnorraSky: The Deception, further developing well-loved characters and introducing new. This was our first sequel, so it holds a special place in our hearts.
Aside from tornadoes and flooding, later in the year we published Bounty Hunter by MF Burbaugh, an Arthurian-inspired fantasy that explores the nature of revenge and faithfulness to higher causes (and, may I add, a little saucy in places). A great adventure.
Elizabeth Lang's sequel to The Empire, The Rebels, was published, to high acclaim by critics. Again, characters loved and hated continue their drama, and some very interesting new characters are introduced.

Geraldine Fitzsimmons' Unlikely Hero was published, which is a police and espionage thriller - powerful and riveting to readers - set in Ireland and the USA, during the 'Troubles'. This was one of the few non-speculative fiction novels published in the year.
Biola Olatunde's Numen Yeye was published later in 2012, an amazing work of contemporary African fantasy, in many ways submerged deep into Nigerian culture, the wonder of their religion, but also an expose of the damage of superstition. This work was a long, great labor of love, as it had to retain the nuances of Nigerian idiomatic English while still be 'translated' sufficiently into US English to be appreciated by Western audiences.
We published the third sequel of the year, Brumbies in the Snow, second of five children's novels in the Brumbies series written by Paula Boer, set in outback Australia - a beautifully illustrated horse story (Rowena Evans is the illustrator). This book has already been very well received in Australia, as was Brumbies.
Talking about Australia, in December 2012 we published Tasmanian Michael B Fletcher's collection of tales about two rogues, Pickel and Weasle who live in sewers beneath a royal palace - Kings of Under-Castle. This is our first collection of short stories by a single author, and only the second anthology since Page Dancers in 2010.

So that is it - a good collection of titles for 2012, with no small number of books written for the younger folk, three sequels, and a collection of short fiction.

Next month I am hoping to provide you with news of our new titles, and upcoming books for later in the year.
Perhaps, just perhaps, you may consider purchasing one or ten of them…or asking others to do the same. It is worth it.

This month I am looking at our 2011 publications.

First cab off the rank, coming out early in 2011, was Circle of Seven, a fantasy novel by MF Burbaugh, our most prolific of writers. We fell in love with this story as it had a sweeping epic fantasy feel about it, and yet it had a science fiction undercurrent. I wouldn't strictly classify it as a 'science fantasy' - fantasy it mostly is, what with original takes on many fantasy-style races, and quests - but Burbaugh paints this canvas beautifully and it is worth delving into this strange, mystical world.

MF Burbaugh did it again with us with the publication of We Were Legends, this time a science fiction with a smattering of fantasy. I think that the author has a strong leaning toward cross-genre writing. This story is about an astronaut, Jake, who crashes onto a dying world, and with the help of his on-board computer, integrates into a strange humanoid culture, but not before he profoundly influences them. Survival, and adventure. This story is the first of many in a series, the next, Blood Sabers, will be out this year.

Following hot from We Were Legends came Louis K Lowy's Die Laughing, a book that is hard to categorize, but science fiction it is. In this title, we have a story set in 1950s USA, with a secret alien invasion, the beginnings of a phenomenon called Vegas, and the mob. Aside from hilariously humorous scenes, and a great nostalgic trip, we also have a tragic protagonist who must face his own demons. This book is one of those 'everything' stories, entertaining and thought-provoking.

In the second half of 2011 we were very productive. We published Ian Hall's Opportunities: Jamie Leith in Darien, the largest tome we have produced to date, and also our only historical novel (non-speculative). We believe we will get the manuscript for its sequel over the next twelve months or so. We look forward to it, as it was a great seafaring adventure.

Four children's stories came out in quick succession: Brumbies, by Paula Boer and illustrated by Rowena Evans, was our first Australian English production, and a great adventure set in Australia's 'bush' - a classic horse tale. A sequel is already out (Brumbies in the Snow), and three more slotted over the next few years. Constellation Station by Gary Alexander Azerier and illustrated by Ioanny Dimov is a richly crafted book about learning astronomy from the point of view of a young boy taking a ride on a train that can travel the cosmos. This is a must-buy for all lovers of astronomy as well as insights into the imagination of children. A Magpie Called Will was written by Australian Peter Rondel and illustrated by New Zealander Frances Hutt - a wonderful tale about a talking magpie who befriends a young boy. Finally, we published Whirlwind (soon to be republished and retitled) by Jennifer R. Resetar, an important work for us, as it was not only entertaining as a children's work, but also has strong messages about bullying and respecting people with physical challenges.
Finally, late in 2011 we published Larry Ivkovich's The Sixth Precept, an action-packed tale set in two time periods - modern Philadelphia and feudal Japan, and how events affect each other, in many, wondrous ways.
We are proud of our catalogue of titles, and what makes our earliest novels unique - apart from them being our first - is that we published a higher percentage of non-speculative pieces than at any time thereafter (and now, we only publish non-spec work for a select number of authors who have published with us previously).

In this newsletter, I want to focus on 2010 titles still available today.

Blood Contract was Biola Olatunde's first novel published by IFWG Publishing. It was a pleasure to publish as it introduced a wonderful diversity to our catalogue, a story written with a strong Nigerian English tone, and an exotic location - Nigeria. What's more, while one could read the novel as a contemporary African adventure, a discerning reader would quickly understand that it is a social commentary on all manner of issues that affect Nigerian society. A wonderful work, and one well worth reading prior to delving into Biola's much more complex and sophisticated work, Numen Yeye.

The Devil Came East, by Geraldine Fitzsimmons and Andy Stephenson, is a crime thriller, and packed with adventure and an immersive insight into a serial killer's mind. We were impressed with the story, and even more so with the quality of the writing skills. We were pleased indeed with having Geraldine continue her professional relationship with us, with the publication of the chap-ebook, To The Battle Born, and her latest novel, Unlikely Hero (again, in the crime thriller genre).

Knorrasky: The Deception, by our own R.A. Knowlton, was our first speculative fiction title, and devoted to the long respected heroic fantasy subgenre. This novel, the first of the Knorrasky series, introduces the reader to a well-crafted fantasy world, where Noman, the King of Knorrasky, is deceived in his own camp, and overthrown by his enemies. While a classic story of good versus evil, the strength of this novel is its study of a man's struggle against the black dog of depression - a topic unusually presented here. Knorrasky: The Earth Blade is R.A. Knowlton's second book (already published), the third will be out over the next year.

The Okapi Promise is the first of many titles written by Paula Boer for IFWG Publishing. This book is a travel adventure, largely taking place in Africa. Paula adds depth to her story, and considerable tension, by overlaying a conspiratorial subplot over it. Since publishing this, Paula has focused her efforts with illustrator Rowena Evans, on their Brumbies series, a children's horse adventure set in Australia, where the pair live. Two books have thus far been published.

Linda Penhall, our delightful author based in South Africa, published They Never Gave Up with us, a story set in Ireland following the lives of two young girls with disparate backgrounds but a devoted friendship. This story is rich with humor, tragedy, love and insights into the human condition. A sequel is planned for the near future.

Finally, we come to Elizabeth Lang, who published her first book of The Empire series (with the same name), which combines riveting and exciting science fiction with an undercurrent of romance. Elizabeth has been given very good reviews for her first novel, and we are very pleased to have shared its publishing. Her sequel was recently published, The Rebels, and we are expecting soon to publish the final of the series, The Andromedans.

Next month I will describe the 2011 titles.
So for this editorial I will make this brief.

Even though I have enjoyed the company of my family and festive dining and presents, I can't forget how lucky I am, and mindful of those less fortunate. I also have a memory of something dreadful that happened not too long ago - the awful shooting in Connecticut. It is so much more poignant for me given that I have a seven year old daughter - and she is autistic, like at least one of the children who were killed. This is not a sour note for the New Year - it is a reminder that, regardless of political and religious persuasion, we can't forget that the Christmas period is a time to convey goodwill to one and all. New Year is also an opportunity to formulate resolutions for change, and I hope that in this tumultuous world, changes for the good of all are made.

Speculative fiction, including much of children's literature, places the human condition under the microscope, and I certainly hope that we, IFWG Publishing, will be able to contribute new titles that will enable people to think, as well as being entertaining. That's my New Year's Resolution.

What's yours?
FletcherWe are excited to announce the release of our first anthology of short stories in nearly three years - Kings Of Under-Castle by Michael B. Fletcher. Michael has been long associated with IFWG Publishing, often participating in our beta reading groups, and is a friend of several other writers based in Australia. I certainly noticed the odd Pickel and Weasle stories popping up in writing challenges, and it was inevitable that these rogues who live in the sewers under a royal castle, would make it to the title list. And so we have it, a collection of fifteen short stories starring the two hilarious protagonists, as well as a cast of other characters that can only rival a Shakespearean comedy.
It was with great pleasure last year that we released Brumbies, by Paula Boer and Rowena Evans (Illustrator), which was the first of a five part series. It was aimed at the young horse-loving market, and it told a great story set in the Australian outback. It was written and published in Australian English (mainly because we correctly assumed that the bulk of sales would be in Australia), and it was choc-a-block full of illustrations, maps, and even an Australian horsemanship glossary. Great value.

We have just released book two, titled Brumbies In The Snow, noticeable with a yellow cover, instead of the green of the first volume. It continues the adventures of the protagonists of the first book, and takes place in Australian winter, where in the highlands there is (yes actually) snow. Another wonderful tale.

We look forward to the remaining three books, each with a unique color, coming out over the next few years. We hope that you consider purchasing this book (or both!) for your older children for Christmas. It would be a treat!
